5th Special Forces Group,

Buon Brieng Camp 1965

This photo series was inspired by the article published in the National Geographic in January 1965. This article dealt with the members of a Special Forces A-Team facing an insurgency of the Montagnard troops they were supposed to advise. The Montagnards lived in the highlands of Central Vietnam and were generally despised by the Vietnamese. The Green Berets took advantage of this situation and launched the CIDG program, which was aimed at equipping and training Montagnard tribes so they would participate in the fight against the Vietcong. The program was very effective and the Special Forces advisors developed strong bonds with their Montagnard troops. However, their hatred towards the Vietnamese was not limited to the Communists, and many serious incidents opposed Montagnards and South Vietnamese Special Forces members.

The photos shown below are supposed to take place a few months after the events described in the article. It shows Green Berets near a Montagnard hut that was built to look as similar as possible to the photos of the article.
