HMM-364 Purple Foxes, Marble Mountain Air Facility 1970

HMM-364 was deployed several times to Vietnam between 1964 and 1971. Its last station was Marble Mountain AF, with CH-46D helicopters, while assigned to MAG-16 (Marine Air Group 16). It often inserted recon teams, amongst other missions. The squadron was very busy in october of 1970, when massive floods hit the Da Nang area and its helicopters were summoned to rescue civilians.

By 1970 , all aircrews are wearing CS/FRP-1 nomex coveralls, GS/FRP-1 gloves, and "chicken plate" bulletproof vests. The helmet pictured here is an APH-6, although the newer SPH-3 was already in use. Two rigger made helmet bags can be seen, as well as a G-1 leather jacket, still a source of pride.
